Ho Boy is one of three short pieces for oboe and piano. each has a humorous or pretentious title. The first and last are puns on Oboe/Hautbois/HoyBoy etc. The other is vaguely programmatic. I thought about a little shepherd boy playing his pipes while looking after the sheep on a sultry hot summer's afternoon. He's a bit mischievous and likes to startle the sheep from time to time.As the afternoon wears on a brief rainstorm interrupts his reveries and he huddles into the bole of a tree feeling quite sorry for himself.
